The Liberty Galați steelworks no longer has an electricity supply contract, and disconnection is “a matter of days,” a company representative familiar with the situation told News.ro.

The deal with Electrica, announced in February for six months and extended by one more month, was not renewed because of unpaid debts. “This time we don’t even have a contract; we’re on the day-ahead market (PZU). So we can stay connected only a few more days,” the source said.

In an open letter signed Thursday by 26 directors, including CEO Aida Nechifor and production director Cornel Moisescu, management warns that a cut-off would within hours bring “the collapse of all the plant’s systems” and a re-energising of the platform that “has never been done” and could take up to 50 days, with possible imbalances in the national grid.

The welded-pipe section, fully booked for the next two to three months, would also stop, with orders at risk. Galați County prefect George Toderașc said he had flagged the energy-interruption risk to the government, citing social and technological stakes.

In February 2026 Electrica announced a memorandum with Liberty Galați for renewable (solar) capacity of up to 500 MW on the plant’s land. News.ro asked Electrica and concordat administrator CITR about the supply contract and the memorandum’s status; by publication time it had received no replies.
