György Matolcsy, governor of the National Bank of Hungary until 2025, was detained on Wednesday morning, 21 October, and taken to the Central Chief Prosecution Office (Központi Nyomozó Főügyészség). This is detention for investigation, not a conviction and not a court-ordered pre-trial remand.
Lawyer Pál Bátki told Telex that his client is suspected of the felony of economic fraud causing significant financial loss and the misdemeanour of using a forged private document. That wording is the defence, based on the charges communicated. A suspect, not a convict.
The prosecution said the same Wednesday morning that it was carrying out coordinated investigative steps at several locations in a case of breach of trust (hűtlen kezelés) causing particularly significant loss, linked to the “MNB case”. Breach of trust at the prosecution and economic fraud at the lawyer are two labels, not the same sentence.
In the afternoon Telex reported from the scene: the suspect interview ended shortly after 15:30; Matolcsy did not give a statement on the merits, only on his personal circumstances; the written suspicion runs to five pages. Prosecutors applied for pre-trial detention. He was taken from the prosecution building to a police jail until a court hearing, expected on Friday. A prosecution motion, not a judge’s order.
The file, in the background, concerns foundations set up by the MNB during his term. Euronews notes that Matolcsy has previously denied allegations about the management of those funds. Neither the old denial nor the parliamentary inquiry is today’s verdict.
Until Friday’s hearing, the closed fact is detention as a suspect and a request for pre-trial remand. The court has not ruled. This is not a conviction.
