Mihaela Pleșa, a US politician of Romanian origin, won another term in the Texas House of Representatives in Tuesday’s elections. The Democrat defeated Republican George Flint in District 70 (Collin County, Dallas metro) and keeps her seat in the state legislature.
In 2022 she became the first person of Romanian origin elected to the Texas House; re-election underlines her foothold in a Republican-leaning state. Born in Dallas in 1983 to Romanian immigrant parents, she represents an important Collin County district.
After the vote she posted on X about her mother, who fled communist Romania seeking freedom and a better life. She said she carries her mother’s courage, sacrifices and dreams every day, and that the freedoms her mother risked everything to find — speech, the vote, a better future — are what she fights for in Austin.
“Mom, everything I do is rooted in the life you worked so hard to give me. I hope I’ve made you proud,” Pleșa wrote, sharing a photo with her mother.
In an August 2025 interview with Antena 3 CNN she discussed Texas political tensions, redistricting and pressure on Democrats who briefly left the state to block a new map. She likened the episode to the Ceaușescu era, quoting her grandmother, and said Texans “don’t take instructions from Trump.”
The same interview noted Texas representatives earn about $7,000 a year and sit 140-day sessions every two years while holding other jobs — unlike a full-time permanent parliament.
