Household savings in Moldova held in banks and the non-bank sector reached 97 billion lei in the second quarter of 2026, according to analyst Veaceslav Ioniță (IDIS Viitorul). He expects the 100 billion threshold by year-end. Radio Moldova reported the analysis on 16 October; TVR Moldova picked it up on 18 October. Banks hold 93.6 billion, non-banks 3.4 billion. This is not a National Bank announcement and not investment advice.
In the first half of the year households set aside 7.2 billion lei, more than the 6.1 billion in new loans, according to the same analysis. Dorel Noroc, of the Banks Association of Moldova, said deposits rose 16% in August from a year earlier. The pace points to caution: people are holding cash in accounts, not necessarily because the economy is „booming”.
Ioniță ties the stock to years of inflation, to remittances and to the fact that, after recent crises, households preferred liquidity. The GDP comparison is an order of magnitude, not an official saving rate. Anyone who reads „record” as an invitation to shift money from one deposit to another has the frame wrong: the story describes a stock, not a bank product.
Moldovan banks remain, in this picture, the main home for domestic savings. The non-bank slice is small (3.4 billion) and does not change the conclusion. TVR's piece does not carry a monthly series published by the NBM for the same day; until a central-bank release, the figures remain those of IDIS and the association.
The setting is a small economy, still sensitive to inflation, with a concentrated banking system. A deposit stock near 100 billion lei says households have money set aside. It does not say prices will fall, that the leu is a currency target, or that any given deposit is „safe”. For that there are prospectuses and, if needed, authorised advice — not a morning news story.
