Moldova could cover about a quarter of its daily gas use from Romania’s Neptun Deep Black Sea field once production starts — expected by end-2027 — Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu told Radio Moldova, Moldpres reports.

Gas will be bought under last year’s contract between Energocom and Romania’s OMV Petrom; the price tracks exchange benchmarks. The formula includes a discount versus those markers, but the size of the “minus” is not public so as not to expose Energocom’s buying strategy, the minister said.

“We are talking about roughly a quarter of our daily gas consumption. That is the contract signed last year between Energocom and OMV Petrom of Romania,” Junghietu said.

Supply from Neptun Deep also means lower transport costs, which could cut end-user tariffs. “If the cost of gas (…) is lower, if transport costs are lower, of course that should be reflected in the tariff paid by citizens,” he added.

Junghietu also discussed amending the gas law for quarterly tariff reviews instead of once a year or only after large negative deviations, so rises and falls in costs feed through faster.

The three-year deal was signed on 7 May 2025 — Energocom’s first long-term purchase contract with this supplier. Neptun Deep is Romania’s largest gas project and its first deepwater offshore field, about 160 km from shore in Romanian waters.
