An experimental MRI contrast agent, hProCA32.Collagen, enabled visualisation of lung tumours and metastases on the order of one millimetre in preclinical animal studies, according to a Science Advances paper led by Professor Jenny J. Yang’s team at Georgia State University. The findings concern animal models, not patients. There is, at this stage, no clinically approved method based on these data.
The agent is protein-based and targets type I collagen, a structural protein that can be abundant in the microenvironment of aggressive tumours and metastatic lesions. Researchers report detecting and quantifying small lesions in the lung, adrenal glands and kidneys in experiments, and mapping features linked to invasion.
A potential advantage of MRI is the absence of ionising radiation, unlike X-ray-based CT. The team compares the approach with an earlier agent aimed at the CXCR4 biomarker. Success in a laboratory model does not demonstrate the same accuracy, safety or usefulness in humans.
The paper, with first author Dongjun Li, was partly funded by the National Institutes of Health. InLighta Biosciences, which has licensed related intellectual property, is working toward evaluations for clinical testing. That is not FDA authorisation and does not mean the agent is available in hospitals.
The university’s 9 September news release described earlier detection than conventional scans in these models. Coverage on 16 September, including health wires, reports the same study. The accurate headline remains: tumours of about one millimetre in animal studies, not “detects cancer earlier in people”.
Further research and, if warranted, clinical trials would still be required. Until then, lung-cancer diagnosis in patients continues to rely on methods already evaluated in the clinic, not on this experimental agent.
