Nikolai Haram Svorte, 29, from Sula in Møre og Romsdal, won the world sommelier championship final in Lisbon on Friday, 16 October 2026. NRK picked up the Aftenposten story; Dagsavisen and VG gave the podium. Silver went to Pascaline Lepeltier of France, bronze to Wataru Iwata of Japan. It is the first time Norway has won the competition. The last Norwegian in a world final was, 37 years ago, Christopher Moestue in 1989 — Svorte's current boss at the importer Remuage by Moestue.

The final ran for hours: blind tasting, theory questions, a service test. The Norwegian sommeliers' association describes the build-up as an elite-sport regime. Svorte is national and Nordic champion; by day he is a product manager specialising in champagne. „I am speechless. I have to start with my family”, he said in the winner's interview, before adding that he needed a few minutes — and a glass of champagne.

Henrik Dahl Jahnsen, the association president, had already called the final berth „madness” and „fantastic”. After gold he spoke of a whole week held at that level, from quarter-final to semi-final. Aftenposten's correction still stands: Svorte is not „the first Norwegian ever” in the final, but the first since Moestue. The distinction matters in the trade's history, not only in a headline.

The championship is not a drinking contest. The tests cover wine, but also beer, non-alcoholic drinks, coffee, tea, sometimes cigars — everything around a restaurant meal. A quarter-final task this year, according to Vink / Aftenposten, put a bottle of white that was not cold on the table: how do you fix it, smoothly, in the shortest time. This is not a shopping guide and it does not recommend a wine.

Lisbon therefore put a Norwegian on the top step, after nearly four decades away from this level. Svorte goes back to the importer with a world title. The rest — „the world's best sommelier” as a marketing line — is the language of the contest, not a cellar rating.
