On 20 September 2017, Hurricane Maria made landfall near Yabucoa, in south-eastern Puerto Rico, as a powerful Category 4 hurricane with winds estimated around 155 mph. It was morning, after the storm had devastated Dominica. 20 September 2026 marks nine years since that strike.
Wind, rain, flooding, storm surge and landslides damaged homes, roads, hospitals and communications. The island’s electrical grid collapsed. Some communities went without essential services for months. Maria exposed fragile infrastructure, poverty and the limits of institutional response.
The human toll should not be confused with a list of victims identified in the first days. Puerto Rico’s government adopted George Washington University’s estimate: 2,975 excess deaths from September 2017 through February 2018, with a confidence interval of 2,658–3,290, in a model that also accounts for population displacement. It is an epidemiological estimate, not a named census.
Rebuilding the power system and resilience remained central long after the immediate emergency. Anniversary coverage privileges the experience of communities, not a spectacle of ruins. NOAA satellite images show the storm, not suffering on the ground.
Maria was an Atlantic tropical cyclone, not a political metaphor. Responsibility for the response, delays and federal debates belong in separate, sourced accounts, not as verdicts thrown into a commemoration.
Nine years on, 20 September remains the day of landfall at Yabucoa. It is not the day the crisis ended. The distinction between deaths confirmed at once and excess mortality must be stated clearly, every time.
