Nuno Bettencourt was born on 20 September 1966 in Praia da Vitória, on Terceira in the Azores. The family moved to Hudson, Massachusetts, when he was four. At 60, the guitarist remains tied to Extreme, the band formed in 1985, not to a virtuoso myth without a discography.

The album Pornograffitti (1990) put the group on the charts. “More Than Words”, the 1991 acoustic ballad, reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The success was the song’s, not a definition of the whole catalogue — Extreme stayed a hard-rock and funk band, not an easy-listening act.

Bettencourt toured as a guitarist with Rihanna. He had side projects (Population 1, DramaGods) and returned periodically with Extreme. Guitar World interviewed him in 2025, on the eve of his 59th birthday: the talk is about touring and technique, not lyrics quoted here.
