One person died on Monday night on Phillip Island after a head-on crash between a bus and a car, both engulfed in flames. ABC reported it. The South Gippsland Sentinel-Times confirmed it. It was not the bus driver. It is not a closed finding on cause.
Police said the car crossed onto the wrong side of Back Beach Road in Ventnor just after 9pm and struck the eastbound bus. That is the police account, not a verdict. The circumstances remain under investigation.
There were 25 people on the bus, including the driver. Four were taken to hospital with minor injuries. Anyone writing that the bus burned with all passengers is writing past a short police note.
The sole occupant of the car died at the scene. They have not been formally identified. ABC and the Sentinel-Times repeat the same limit: identification is still to come.
Both vehicles caught fire after the impact. The island is in Victoria, south-east of Melbourne. Local time was Monday 19 October, evening. The ABC piece is dated 20 October morning, Australian time, not a day after the crash.
Police want witnesses, dashcam and CCTV through Crime Stoppers Victoria. An open investigation is not a named culprit.
