A police officer was killed after terrorists attacked a police post in Bajaur district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, officials said on Friday, Dawn reports.

The attack on the Silai Pati post in remote Barang tehsil, bordering Malakand district, took place late Thursday night. District police spokesperson Mansoor Khan said a group of Fitna al-Khawarij terrorists — the state’s term for militants of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan — targeted the post and personnel returned fire.

The official said the officer died after putting up resistance and that the attackers fled after an effective response by staff at the post. No group has claimed responsibility.

Funeral prayers were held at the Police Lines in Khar, attended by Deputy Commissioner Adnan Farid Afridi, DPO Khan Zeb Mohmand and local elders; many police and civic activists attended before the body was taken to his native area in Barang for burial.

On Thursday Bajaur’s administration banned pillion riding for 10 days under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, citing the security situation and reports from intelligence and police. A similar 15-day ban had been imposed on 5 September.

KP has long faced terrorist attacks and security challenges. A recent Centre for Research and Security Studies report recorded an 83% rise in violence-linked fatalities in the third quarter of 2026; Balochistan and KP together accounted for 98% of national deaths in the period (829 and 556 respectively).
