Romania was among the European Union countries recording the largest increase in petrol prices in August 2026 compared with the previous month. Eurostat data show a rise of 6.6%, above the EU average of 3.3%.

Diesel prices in Romania increased by 6.1% from July. Although significant for consumers and transport operators, this was among the smaller increases in the Union for this fuel during a month in which 26 member states reported rises.

Compared with August 2025, prices for fuels used in personal transport were 26.7% higher in Romania, against an EU average of 23.8%. The development reflects pressure from international oil markets, exchange rates, taxation and refining and distribution margins.

Eurostat percentages measure changes in price indices and do not represent one nationwide pump price. Amounts paid by drivers differ by location, filling station and fuel type, while comparisons should use the same period and methodology.

The figures should be read as percentage changes in indices, not as a single national price per litre. Cross-country comparisons must account for taxes and Eurostat methodology.

For consumers in Romania, the impact appears in the cost of personal transport and goods distribution, against wider pressure already present in the European energy market.
