Romania’s Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) on Friday rejected politicisation charges and called on the National Liberal Party (PNL) to back electoral reform instead of blocking it procedurally, according to Mediafax / the authority’s statement.
AEP president Adrian Țuțuianu told Digi24 he rejected claims that a draft changing party law aims to block a possible PNL–USR alliance in 2028. He said proposals have been discussed with parties since August and that the goal is to simplify procedures.
“It is nonsense peddled in public by politicians who do not want to see reality,” Țuțuianu said, citing earlier Justice Ministry and CSM positions on party registration.
Among other measures, AEP proposes raising the minimum founding members from three to 100 — citing Cyprus as a similar EU floor — and shifting party registration from courts to AEP. Țuțuianu said he will also send the draft to the government, along with one on organising the authority.
In its statement, AEP reaffirmed it is autonomous and non-political: “Institutional reform cannot be supported only in words and, at the same time, blocked procedurally.” It lists five legislative initiatives from the past nine months and notes its organisation regulation, filed in March 2026, has still not been approved by Parliament.
