The local authority in Shabwa said on Monday, 19 October, that 53 people were killed and 200 wounded after a missile strike on the al-Alam camp. In the morning, officials of the internationally recognised government and medical sources had spoken of at least 18 dead and more than 30 wounded. The count rose through the day. It is not a Red Cross figure and not a final tally.

A spokesman for government forces said the Houthis fired three ballistic missiles at the camp during a training exercise. Recruits were, in the reporting, lined up. Al Jazeera writes that they were new security recruits. The Guardian places the camp in Jardan district; the wounded were taken to hospital in Ataq, the provincial capital.

The Houthis, from Sanaa, claimed the strike. Spokesman Yahya Saree, Al Jazeera quotes, spoke of a “Saudi-backed” base. A Houthi statement spoke of “Saudi enemy concentrations” and of Saudi officers among the casualties. The government in Aden has not confirmed any officers. That is the Houthi account, not a list of names.

Rashad al-Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, said the dead were recruits and promised a “firm response”. His words — “terrorist attacks” when the group is under pressure — are his. It is not an operation already launched and not a court verdict.

Fighting in Yemen resumed after the 2022 truce, against the background of this year’s US–Israel war on Iran. The Houthis pushed along the Red Sea coast last month; the government answered with the “Dawn of Yemen” offensive. That is the frame, not a proven cause of Monday’s three missiles. DW also notes an interim figure from deputy governor Fahad al-Khalifi: at least 50 dead.

The closed fact is the strike on the camp and the claim of responsibility. The 53 and the 200 come from the Shabwa authority. The morning’s 18 remains the first threshold. Who the people were, how many Saudis, what comes next — is not counted.
