The Nordic Council on Tuesday 20 October 2026 named the winner of the 2026 Literature Prize: the novel Láŋtdievvá / Planterhaug by Sigbjørn Skåden, from Sápmi / Norway. This is a prize announcement. The Helsinki ceremony, tied to the Nordic Council session on 27 October, has not been held yet.

Norden.org says each of the Nordic Council prizes is worth DKK 300,000. The statuette is to be presented in Helsinki on 27 October; until then, the sum and the gala are not “the prize handed over today”.

The notice says it is the first time in 35 years that a Sámi-language work has won this prize, after Nils-Aslak Valkeapää’s Beaivi, Áhčážan (The Sun, My Father) in 1991. Skåden was nominated by both the Sámi-language and the Norwegian committees. The novel was published simultaneously in Sámi and in Norwegian.

In the Norwegian edition the author moves between Tornedalen Sámi, Nynorsk and Bokmål. The jury describes a poetic 185-page novel in which detective John Edgar Huuva returns to his home village over a death, with threads back to the policy of Norwegianisation and forward to Sámi identity in Norway today. That is the jury’s rationale, not our own review.

Skåden was born in 1976, writes in two languages and has published poetry, novels and a children’s book. In 2007 his epic long poem Skuovvadeddjiid gonagas (The King of the Shoemakers) was nominated for the same prize. That old nomination is not Tuesday’s award.

Norden.org notes that, for the first time, all 2026 Nordic Council prize winners are from Norway. The juries work independently; Norwegian dominance is not a political package. We do not mix the literature prize with the film, music or environment prizes.

NRK reported the win from Troms og Finnmark. SVT carried the announcement, but the rewrite sits on norden.org, not on a reprint host. A dump headline does not change the fact: announced on 20 October, gala on 27.

Until the Helsinki session, the closed fact remains the designation: Skåden, Láŋtdievvá / Planterhaug, Nordic Council Literature Prize 2026, DKK 300,000, a Sámi-language work 35 years after Valkeapää.
