Sulzeer Jeremiah Campbell was born in east London, in Newham, on 18 September 1974. At 52, his career remains that of a Premier League and England centre-back, not a terrace slogan.

He came through Tottenham Hotspur’s academy, made his first-team debut in 1992 and became captain. With Tottenham he won the League Cup in 1999. In 2001, after his contract expired, he signed for Arsenal, a rival club in the same city. The transfer was lawful and contested by some Spurs supporters; this article records it as a transfer fact, without insults.

At Arsenal he won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups. He was part of the side that completed the 2003–04 league season unbeaten. He scored in the 2006 UEFA Champions League final against Barcelona; Arsenal lost the match 2–1.

He later played for Portsmouth, winning the FA Cup in 2008, with spells at Notts County, a return to Arsenal and a final season at Newcastle United. For England he won 73 caps between 1996 and 2007 and appeared at six major tournaments.

After retiring he managed Macclesfield Town and Southend United. The coaching record is short and fragmented beside the playing career. The centre-back’s stature remains the dominant public image.
