Sophia Loren turns 92. Born Sofia Villani Scicolone in Rome on 20 September 1934, she grew up in Pozzuoli near Naples in the war years. Beauty contests and small parts preceded producer Carlo Ponti’s support and the change of screen name.

With Vittorio De Sica she made the hard films of the career. For the mother in La ciociara (Two Women) she won the Best Actress Oscar — a first for a leading role played in a language other than English.

The partnership with Marcello Mastroianni includes Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, Marriage Italian Style and A Special Day. In parallel she worked in Hollywood. In 1991 the Academy gave her an honorary Oscar for the body of work.

She has acted selectively since, including The Life Ahead (2020), directed by her son Edoardo Ponti. Longevity is not a beauty poster: dramatic and comic performances broke the stereotype.
