HBO has announced the cast. Antonio Banderas and Nicolas Cage, season 5 of True Detective. Spiegel, via dpa: Banderas, 66; Cage, 62. Filming, “im kommenden Jahr”, so 2027. The setting, Jamaica Bay, south-east New York. That is the announcement. It is not a trailer. It is not an air date.

Deadline: Banderas joined after Cage spoke first, at New York Comic-Con. Cage’s quote, taken up by the Hollywood Reporter: he will probably do another season of television; it might be True Detective. “That’s OK that I’m the first to announce that, right?” HBO then confirmed, on 16 October. A teaser, Rolling Stone writes, walks through the old pairings — McConaughey and Harrelson, Farrell and Vaughn — and stops on Cage and Banderas. The characters: Henry Logan, Cage; Rai Garcia, Banderas. Few other details. They have not shared a screen before, Rolling Stone again.

Showrunner: Issa López. She wrote, directed and ran Night Country, 2024. She stays. Jodie Foster and Kali Reis then, eight researchers missing in Alaska. López, to the New York Post, cited by Deadline: important connections with Ennis. And: a new story, new characters. “A little bit of joy for the fans of Night Country.” A promise, not a synopsis. Francesca Orsi, in 2025, had already put Jamaica Bay on the map. Casey Bloys, then too: Issa is working on the script. The premiere date, TV Insider notes, is not set. A 2027 production start is not a broadcast calendar.

The anthology, 2014. First, Louisiana, McConaughey, Harrelson. 2015, California, Farrell, Vaughn. 2019, Arkansas, Ali, Dorff. Then Alaska. Each season, a new case, new detectives. The creator, Nic Pizzolatto, stays on as a producer, with Cary Joji Fukunaga, Harrelson, McConaughey, Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Steve Golin, Richard Brown. Cage and Banderas, executive producers too, Deadline writes. That is a contract list. It is not a set.

THR: season 5, ordered in February 2024, right after Night Country. Cage, rumours from summer 2025. Banderas, from late last year. Cage comes off Spider-Noir and Madden, both Prime. Banderas, after Tony, Babygirl, Up Against It, Toronto. HBO, THR notes, sits under Skydance after the Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery merger. That is studio context. It is not a scene from Jamaica Bay.

Until the first frame, what remains is two names and a marsh on a map. After the first frame, what remains is whether Ennis can be seen from Queens. Between them, an actor who announced the part at a panel and a magazine that filed it under Leute.
