Truls Möregårdh was knocked out of the European Table Tennis Championships in Ljubljana on Friday, 16 October 2026, in the last 16 by Norway’s Borgar Haug, 4–2 in sets. The Swede is world No. 4, Haug No. 213 — a gap of 209 places. NRK called the result a sensation; SVT called it a major upset.

Haug took the first three sets (12–10, 11–8, 12–10). In the fourth he had a match point, but Möregårdh turned it 12–10. The fifth also went to the Swede. In the sixth the umpire ruled out one of Möregårdh’s serves; the player protested sharply. He led 2–1 in that set, then fell to 2–8 and lost the set, and the match.

SVT expert David Kärrå Gustafsson said Möregårdh was frustrated and that, in his view, the serve was not illegal. Afterwards Möregårdh told SVT Sport he would not have won anyway: Haug played better table tennis on the day and deserved the credit. Haug, 23, had never reached a European Championship quarter-final before.

Möregårdh, 24, Olympic silver medallist in singles and teams at Paris 2024, had not dropped a set in the tournament before this match. Haug had already beaten 11th seed Marcos Freitas. On Saturday in the quarter-finals Haug meets Sweden’s Anton Källberg, world No. 29, around 13:20. Källberg is the last Swede left in men’s singles.

The championships are run by the ETTU in Ljubljana. This article is not an umpiring review; the serve dispute is television reporting, not a commission ruling. The 4–2 score is confirmed by SVT, NRK and Sportschau’s results list.
