The US State Department said on Tuesday, 20 October, that more than 300,000 visas had been revoked in Donald Trump’s second term. Spokesman Tommy Pigott wrote on X that the pace was faster than any previous administration. This is an institutional figure, not a new law and not a court sentence.
On 10 August the same department put the total, since the term began in January 2025, at more than 175,000. In January it had announced more than 100,000. CNA notes the acceleration between August and October. That is a change in the running total, not a third visa category.
Pigott said the administration has zero tolerance for foreigners on visas who break the law, commit fraud or undermine national security. A note sent to Al Jazeera repeated that action continues “to keep our borders, and our nation, secure.” That is the department’s wording, not an independent finding on each file.
An official told Al Jazeera that the vast majority of the revocations were for criminal activity, public-safety concerns, immigration violations, fraud or other information that the person was no longer eligible. More than 4,000 were for “birth tourism.” The 25 percent assault and 22 percent driving-under-the-influence shares appear in the same quote; Newsweek ties those shares to the Continuous Vetting Center’s more than 23,000 cases, not to the whole 300,000. We do not apply them to the full figure.
CNA and Al Jazeera also mention social-media screening and criticism from rights groups: due process, free speech, racial profiling. That is the policy dispute, not the content of Tuesday’s number. We do not turn G4’s line about pro-Palestinian protesters into the explanation of the 300,000 visas.
Revoking a visa is an administrative act of the State Department. It is not a criminal conviction and does not, by itself, say whether a holder already in the United States also loses a stay status. Until a public breakdown by nationality and visa type, the closed fact is the announcement: more than 300,000 revocations in the second term, against more than 175,000 on 10 August.
