The PSD group in Romania’s Senate strengthened its majority after five senators from the Young People’s Party (POT) and SOS Romania joined the Social Democrats. Among them is 42-year-old Valentina Aldea, whose floor announcement went viral.
Announcing the switch, she first said she had “transferred” to PSD. The wording drew laughter in the chamber — including her own — while colleagues applauded and shouted “Courage!” She then corrected herself: she had affiliated with the Social Democratic parliamentary group.
Valentina Mariana Aldea entered the Senate after the 2024 elections on POT’s Bucharest list, a party led by Anamaria Gavrilă. Her term has also featured other controversies.
In autumn 2025 she was physically assaulted in a Sector 6 residential parking lot: a woman allegedly attacked her with a metal object and vandalised her car, citing a purported relationship between the MP and the woman’s husband. The attacker was placed under judicial control; three criminal cases were opened.
After the December 2024 vote, several outlets wrongly linked her to a webcam model based on a physical resemblance. Aldea sued and won moral damages after the court found the claims were published without checks. Her name has also appeared in coverage of her sister Iuliana Patricia Aldea’s relationship with Sector 4 mayor Daniel Băluță.
The move to PSD fits a broader consolidation of the Social Democratic Senate group and underlines post-2024 parliamentary mobility.
