Major Wall Street indexes traded mixed on Friday at the end of a week marked by higher bond yields and swings in oil prices. The figures below are market snapshots, not the official close.
The Associated Press reported in early trading that the S&P 500 was virtually unchanged, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down about 0.3% (roughly 139 points at 9:35 a.m. Eastern time) and the Nasdaq Composite was about 0.3% higher. A press pack that put the Dow down 0.5% is not used here, because it does not match the AP update.
The yield on ten-year US Treasuries rose to 4.98% on Friday after topping 5% earlier in the week for the first time since 2023. Higher yields raise borrowing costs and can reduce the present value assigned to future earnings.
Brent crude briefly fell below $102 a barrel overnight before returning to around $104. AP linked recent energy volatility to tensions in the Middle East; this article does not claim a single closing price for the full session.
One morning of trading does not establish a trend. Performance will depend on economic data, interest-rate decisions, company results and the geopolitical picture.
