World Habitat Day falls on the first Monday of October: in 2026, 5 October. It opens Urban October. The UN-Habitat theme, from the 2026 event toolkit, is “Adequate Housing for All”.

The official kit describes a global housing crisis in which, on UN-Habitat’s estimate, about 2.8 billion people face forms of inadequate housing, of whom nearly 1.1 billion live in slums and informal settlements. Those figures belong to the programme, with the 2026 toolkit year.

The global-observance page still lists the host city as “TBC”. This account does not name a host capital until UN-Habitat confirms it. Scroll of Honour awards are also due at the 5 October observance.

Costs, shortages of affordable homes and climate risks press unevenly. Planning can reduce floods and heat, but a poorly designed project can displace residents. There is no single policy for very different cities.

“Adequate housing” is used in the UN documents’ sense, not as a property slogan. Local events are read from municipalities and UN-Habitat.
