World Science Day for Peace and Development is observed on 10 November 2026. The UNESCO initiative aims to link science more closely with society and to engage the public in debates on emerging scientific issues.

The 2026 theme is “Common ground through science diplomacy.” The message stresses research, knowledge exchange and cooperation among specialists as bridges between institutions and states.

UNESCO sets out four objectives: awareness of science’s role, solidarity for shared knowledge, renewed public commitment and attention to the challenges facing research. They describe an observance, not a new treaty.

Universities, schools, museums and institutes may prepare conferences, workshops, exhibitions or online activities. Programmes differ from country to country. An event’s association with UNESCO must be confirmed by the local organiser.

Science diplomacy does not replace political negotiations. It can support dialogue through data, joint projects and professional networks. Reporting should distinguish peer-reviewed findings from preliminary or promotional claims.
