Belize marks 45 years of independence on 21 September 2026. The former colony of British Honduras became a sovereign state on 21 September 1981, after expanded self-government and negotiations. The name Belize had been adopted officially in 1973.

The country remained in the Commonwealth. The system is a parliamentary monarchy. The capital is Belmopan; Belize City remains the largest urban and economic centre.

Independence Day is associated with parades, concerts and local events. The 2026 programme, times and venues should be checked with Belizean institutions. An event in one town is not the whole country’s.

Independence in 1981 is not the same as earlier self-rule. This article does not invent festival themes or speeches unpublished by the authorities.

The regional setting of the 1970s and 1980s complicated the timetable. Without a figure or a quote from an official document, the gaps are not filled with generalities.

The flag, the constitutional record and the date of 21 September remain the marker. This year’s ceremonies are updated separately if the government announces them.
