Tens of thousands of opposition supporters gathered in Delhi on Sunday for a Congress-led INDIA alliance rally against Narendra Modi’s government. The flashpoint is a special intensive revision (SIR) of voter rolls that, according to the opposition, erased about 130 million names — a process leaders say advantages the ruling BJP.
Rahul Gandhi called for the resignation and impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing him of trying to “silence the voice of people.” The rally’s slogan was “Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao” (save votes, save the country). The BJP denies the charges; party president JP Nadda branded the protest a “calculated conspiracy” toward anarchy.
Congress had predicted a million participants; the crowd was in the tens of thousands, with empty seats visible at Ramlila Maidan — a reminder that the opposition is still not widely seen as a consolidated alternative. Organisers said many buses were stopped from entering Delhi. The youth “Cockroaches” movement, which forced a cabinet minister’s resignation in the summer, offered rhetorical support but its leaders did not attend.
The rolls scandal deepened after Indian media investigations into SIR irregularities; Human Rights Watch said the allegations raise “serious questions” about the fairness of future elections. The Election Commission denies favouring any party and says wrongly deleted voters can re-register. The next general election is due in 2029.
