The European Day of Languages falls on 26 September 2026, under the motto “Languages unite!”. It was launched in 2001 by the Council of Europe and the European Commission. It is not a single public holiday in every state.

Schools, universities, cultural institutes and European institutions list activities in the ECML database. The number is dynamic. Some require registration; others are for one class only or online only.

The Commission is separately holding a virtual event on 30 September, 12:00–16:30 CEST, on inclusion through languages, together with International Translation Day. That is not the same date as 26 September. A virtual exhibition is announced from 25 September to 2 October.

Participation by Romanian communities abroad depends on what is listed locally, not on a single national programme. Romanian may appear where organisers include it.

The events database is a catalogue. The main source is the Commission (DG Translation) page on the 30 September event, read together with 26 September on the ECML site.

We do not publish school addresses without an open notice. We do not invent a final count of activities.

26 September is the annual marker. 30 September is the Commission’s online event.
