Eamonn Vaughan, the new owner of Morrissey’s pub in Doonbeg, Co Clare, is preparing for the Irish Open, which begins on Thursday. He is putting up marquees to handle the expected influx of visitors and says the Trump family is “more than welcome” at his bar.

The US president is expected to spend time at his Trump International Doonbeg resort during the golf event. Vaughan notes that Trump has visited before while in office and that the subject does not generate intense political debate in the town.

“It might seem controversial to people not from Doonbeg, but there is no real talk about it in the town,” Vaughan says. “We all know Donald Trump is coming. He has come before, so there is no one in Doonbeg who’s really into politics or gets involved.”

His focus, he adds, is hospitality: “All we can do is make sure that everyone who comes to Doonbeg wants to come back again next year and the year after and the year after.”
