Prime Minister Luca Niculescu says court rulings under which magistrates awarded themselves unpaid salary rights must be enforced, and that he wants a dialogue with beneficiaries so arrears can be paid in instalments, news.ro reports.

“It is a state of tension that we clearly do not want to prolong. A discussion, a dialogue will begin to see how a staggered schedule can exist,” the head of government said, according to the agency’s headline and summary.

“I think everyone in this country understands the context we are in and at the same time I think there are tensions that could be eased,” Niculescu added.

Romanian coverage of the same file says talks concern paying salary arrears owed to magistrates — put in some reports in the billions of lei — through instalment proposals, not by contesting the principle of payment.

The government says it will respect judicial decisions on salary rights while seeking a fiscally feasible calendar. Negotiations with magistrates’ representatives are to start on that dialogue framework.
