European Parliament Vice-President Victor Negrescu (PSD) says the US midterms have concrete stakes for Romania — from funding European security and the American military presence to support for the Eastern Flank, Black Sea security and US–EU trade. “Romania must work effectively with both Democrats and Republicans,” he wrote on Facebook, as reported by Digi24.
“The American election result changes the balance of power in Washington. For the next two years, President Donald Trump will have to work with a Congress where Democrats hold majorities in both chambers,” Negrescu said. Congress passes legislation and federal budgets; the Senate confirms key appointments; majorities can shape foreign, defence and economic priorities.
For Romania, the stakes are “greater than they first appear,” he argued, citing European security funding, US troops, the Eastern Flank, the Black Sea and transatlantic commerce.
As a member of the EP delegation for relations with the United States, Negrescu said influence in Washington is built through steady ties with both parties, Congress, the administration and the states. He criticised “overly partisan” approaches in Bucharest and those who “suddenly change their discourse” after the result.
The new majority will also reshuffle committee leadership, including foreign affairs, defence and budgets — meaning new interlocutors for Romanian diplomacy. He also drew a broader lesson: living costs and economic security were central in the US campaign and matter equally for Europeans and Romanians.
“The strategic partnership with the United States must stay above electoral cycles. Political change in Washington (…) must be understood and turned into concrete opportunities for Romania’s security, economy and international influence,” he concluded. Digi24 notes that, according to US media projections, Democrats have taken both chambers.
