Democrats have won both the Senate and the House, taking control of Congress for the rest of Donald Trump’s presidency, BBC News Romania reports in a round-up of key midterm moments.

Even before the full count finished, projections gave Democrats reason to celebrate. The party scored wins in states Trump carried comfortably two years ago — including Texas, Kansas, Ohio and South Carolina — with significant swings.

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries could become the next speaker if colleagues back him, succeeding Republican Mike Johnson. Trump spoke to US media through the evening in a conciliatory tone, saying Democrats did “a good job,” that he would accept the results and look forward to working together — though he can still veto legislation.

He distanced himself from some Republican candidates: “In some cases they didn’t like the candidates, and in others those candidates weren’t my friends.” He acknowledged that the US–Israel war against Iran, which hit consumer prices, shaped the vote: “Iran was part of it.”

The defeat of Maine Senator Susan Collins, a three-decade Republican, by Democrat Troy Jackson underlines the scale of losses. In Texas, James Talarico’s Senate win and Gina Hinojosa’s election as governor mark two statewide Democratic victories after nearly two generations of setbacks.
