The 2026 MLB postseason has its first two mathematically confirmed participants. The Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers locked up playoff berths on Friday night in almost opposite ways: a 3-1 walk-off in St. Petersburg and a 20-0 rout in Milwaukee.

In both cases the clinch is a playoff berth, not a division title. The Rays lead the AL East and the Brewers hold a large NL Central lead, but those division races are not yet officially closed.

Caminero sends the Rays to October

Tampa Bay beat the Houston Astros 3-1. In the ninth, with one out, Jonathan Aranda doubled; Jonny DeLuca ran for him, and Junior Caminero drove Bryan Abreu’s first-pitch 97 mph fastball to left-center, about 417 feet. It was a two-run walk-off, Caminero’s 40th home run of the season — he leads the American League — and the first walk-off homer of his career. The Rays (88-59) became the first MLB club to secure a postseason spot. Victor Mesa Jr. had tied the game with a solo homer in the fifth.

The berth means Tampa Bay cannot finish worse than a wild-card team. The AL East title and a possible first-round bye remain in play. It is the Rays’ first postseason appearance since 2023.

Milwaukee answers 20-0

The Brewers then turned their clinch into a statement. Milwaukee beat the Cincinnati Reds 20-0, with a season-high 23 hits and a combined two-hitter: Dustin May for six innings and Garrett Stallings for the last three, for his first save. The Brewers (92-56) have the majors’ best record and clinched their eighth postseason berth in nine seasons. They remain 10 games ahead of the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central; their magic number to win the division is four. Until then they are guaranteed at least a wild-card place.

Garrett Mitchell went 3-for-5 with the first grand slam of his career — his 10th homer of the year — capping an eight-run fifth that made it 17-0. William Contreras drove in six runs, including a three-run homer in the eighth. Brice Turang went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a three-run homer in the second; Jake Bauers also homered. Jackson Chourio had four hits and two RBIs.

Two clinches, one table

The Rays needed a late swing. The Brewers controlled the entire night. The consequence is the same: they are the first two teams to lock up places in the 2026 MLB postseason.

Elsewhere on Friday, the New York Yankees beat the New York Mets 6-4, the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 in 11 innings, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Miami Marlins 6-2, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Texas Rangers 9-1. The regular season is entering its decisive stretch: division titles, wild-card places and playoff seeding remain open for everyone else.
