Romania's General Inspectorate for Immigration announced that its territorial offices issued or renewed 16,764 residence permits in August 2026. The workload reflects applications from people working, studying, joining family or settling in Romania.

Of the total, 12,876 permits were granted to foreigners arriving for employment, education or long-term residence. The remaining documents cover other legal categories of stay, which should be distinguished before presenting more detailed statistics.

The Inspectorate also continued managing the situation of people displaced by the war in Ukraine. Temporary protection is a separate legal regime from an ordinary residence permit and should not automatically be treated as labour migration.

The number of documents issued or renewed is not identical to the number of people who entered Romania during the same month. A permit may be renewed, and resident statistics should be interpreted alongside validity periods and legal grounds.

The Inspectorate balance sheet remains the reference for the August figures. Any breakdown by category should be checked against official institutional statements.

In reading the data, issued documents should be distinguished from unique persons, new permits from renewals, and ordinary residence from temporary protection.
