Two people died on Friday after a small aircraft crashed onto Germany’s A2 motorway northeast of Magdeburg. Police in Saxony-Anhalt said both occupants were recovered dead, and early findings indicated that no road vehicles were struck in the impact.
The crash occurred on 6 November at about 14:48 local time between Burg and the Krähenberge service area, on the Hannover-bound carriageway. The aircraft caught fire on impact; fire crews from several nearby towns, ambulance units and psychosocial emergency teams were dispatched to the scene.
Photographs from the response showed the remains of a red-and-white aircraft on the roadway roughly a kilometre from the Krähenberge rest area. The tail section lay on the carriageway, with burnt debris on an embankment. Traffic towards Hannover was closed while crews worked.
The A2 is one of Germany’s main east–west corridors, linking the greater Berlin area with North Rhine-Westphalia. Closing one direction on that route disrupted a heavily used corridor, though police reported no casualties among motorists.
German media reported that the aircraft belonged to Aero Club Kropp in Schleswig-Holstein and carried a club member plus a second person. The club chairman confirmed the loss to dpa and said a party planned for Saturday at the airfield had been cancelled.
The cause of the crash remains unclear. Investigators from the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) and police documented the site near Möser and asked witnesses who saw the aircraft beforehand to come forward. Wreckage was later removed and A2 restrictions were lifted the same evening.
