Starlink Mobile is preparing a global push for service that links ordinary phones straight to satellites, and Romania is on the shortlist of target markets, Gadget.ro writes. Unlike dish-based Starlink internet, Mobile needs a local carrier partner for spectrum and network integration.
Meanwhile Orange, Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom and Telefónica have announced an alliance for a European satellite constellation, also tied to projects such as AST SpaceMobile. Gadget.ro argues that, as subsidiaries of those groups, Orange and Vodafone Romania would have local options blocked or limited for a parallel Starlink Mobile deal.
In that reading, Digi Mobil is cast as Romania’s most plausible SpaceX partner: not publicly tied to the European satellite project, scaled on the local market, and able to use satellites where terrestrial coverage fails. There is, however, no official Digi–SpaceX Direct-to-Cell agreement announced.
Other analyses (InsiderNews, F5X) still flag Orange as plausible, given SpaceX–Orange ties in Spain, and note SpaceX could sign with more than one carrier. Mobilissimo stresses Digi has no announced Direct-to-Device programme yet, while Orange and Vodafone are already testing via AST.
The cautious takeaway: Romania is on Starlink Mobile’s radar; the local partner is still market speculation, not a signed contract. A Digi–SpaceX tie-up could bring phone coverage in blank spots, but for now it remains editorial scenario, not a corporate announcement.
