Moldova’s prime minister Vasile Tofan said union with Romania is a fundamental decision about the state’s future and cannot be “downgraded” to a mere Plan B, Digi24 reported, citing deschide.md. He spoke at the Euronews Enlargement Summit 2026.

“We have a great deal in common with Romania. The same history, the same language, the same culture; we were once the same country. Romania is by far our greatest friend and I believe our relationship is more than strategic — truly fraternal,” Tofan said.

He rejected treating reunification as a fallback if other strategic goals fail: decisions about statehood are not Plan B. He also stressed that such a step must rest on majority will — and that there is not enough popular support now, as with a hypothetical NATO accession.

The current priority, he reiterated, remains European integration. “Our Plan A is to reach the European Union and unite with Romania there, as part of a common Europe.”

The message frames union inside a shared European political and economic community, not as a substitute for failed reforms, and underlines respect for citizens’ choices on fundamental questions.
