On Tuesday, 20 October 2026, at 17:25, at the Wien-Kledering marshalling yard near Schwechat, two freight trains collided side-on — a Flankenfahrt, ÖBB said. No one was injured. ÖBB passenger traffic was not directly affected. The cause is under investigation, not a verdict.
Three wagons loaded with cars derailed and partly tipped over. The fire on some cars and wagons was put out by the fire brigade. ÖBB speaks of cars. ORF, at first, and APA the next day: among them electric cars, and hybrids. Those are two descriptions of the load, not two accidents.
ORF first wrote “around 17:30.” The ÖBB statement fixes 17:25. Those are two times, from different sources. More than 100 firefighters, including the airport brigade, were on scene, ORF said. The smoke column was visible from far off. The area was sealed.
The yard is partly restricted. Freight trains are being diverted. On Wednesday ÖBB spokesman Daniel Pinka told APA that the cars were taken away overnight, that the wagons would follow, and only then could the damage to the rails be measured. Whether the soil was contaminated is also being checked. A check is not a pollution tally.
ÖBB thanked the firefighters and the police. Damage to cargo, wagons and infrastructure is acknowledged; the exact sum is not given. No one is charged. No one is convicted.
On Wednesday ORF returned with a headline about the search for the cause. That is the day after, not a second crash. Passenger trains kept running on the passenger network.
