The 81st session of the UN General Assembly opened on 8 September 2026 and runs until 7 September 2027. Its president is Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh. The session theme, repeated for the general debate, is “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All”.

The general debate is scheduled from Tuesday 22 September to Saturday 26 September, plus Monday 28 September 2026. The official debate site describes it as the moment when every member state takes the podium at headquarters in New York.

Plenary speeches are only one part of high-level week. Bilateral meetings, thematic sessions and negotiations run in parallel. Some may produce joint statements; others will leave no immediate public text.

A leader’s attendance and exact speaking time can change. The daily speakers’ list and broadcasts should be checked on gadebate.un.org on the day of each sitting, not from diplomatic notices the secretariat has not confirmed.

Organisers say the week’s political agenda covers humanitarian crises, security, climate and technological change, including artificial intelligence. This article does not assign positions to states that have not yet spoken.
