World Maritime Day 2026 is observed on 24 September, under the International Maritime Organization, the UN specialised agency for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping.

The IMO webpage for the 2026 edition was still marked “Coming soon” when consulted. The annual theme, the secretary-general’s message and the public programme are not taken here from older material. They will be updated when IMO publishes them.

IMO presents itself as the forum where states agree common standards: ship design, equipment, crews, operation and pollution prevention. Without shared rules, operators could cut corners on safety or the environment.

The organization places maritime transport at the centre of global trade and speaks of a transition towards energy efficiency, new technology, training and infrastructure. Solutions differ by vessel type and route; this article does not invent emission percentages or national deadlines.

Events linked to the world day may follow local calendars other than 24 September. Ports, maritime authorities and seafarers’ associations announce their programmes separately.
