World Teachers’ Day falls on Monday 5 October 2026. The observance, held since 1994, commemorates the 1966 UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. This year marks 60 years since that text, which is also under revision.

UNESCO’s official theme is “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures”. It is not a local campaign slogan. It concerns recognition, professional autonomy and material conditions — pay, workload, environment — without generalising a worldwide salary.

The global celebration is announced at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, co-convened with the ILO, UNICEF and Education International. The opening is due with Director-General Khaled El-Enany. The programme includes discussions, a teachers’ choir and the ninth UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development. Registration for the Paris event closes on 30 September 2026, CET.

Schools and unions may hold their own ceremonies; schedules differ. Some meetings have restricted access or a webcast. Figures on shortages or pay belong to a country and a year, not to an average planetary teacher.
