On 16 October 1990, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands sign the Agreement on the Conservation of Seals in the Wadden Sea, a regional agreement under the Bonn Convention (CMS) to protect harbour seals in the trilateral area.
The document provides for joint research, monitoring, habitat and measures against disturbance. It complements trilateral Wadden Sea cooperation.
It entered into force on 1 October 1991. It remains the dedicated legal instrument for Wadden Sea seals.
The official text is on the Wadden Sea Secretariat / CMS sites.
For North European marine conservation, 16 October 1990 marks the agreement’s signature.
The document is available on waddensea-worldheritage.org / cms.int.
The agreement of 16 October 1990 remains the milestone of Wadden Sea seal protection.
