An editorial about Europe's economic suicide and the Romanian response to the same tragedy.

The Financial Times has finally said out loud what was previously only whispered in the corners: Germany is collapsing, and the European Union has pushed it off the cliff.

Steel mills are closing, car factories are shrinking, and German business leaders are becoming increasingly vocal. The so-called "sick man of Europe" is sick again - but the illness is no longer inefficiency, but economic suicide orchestrated by unelected elites in Brussels and imposed by obedient politicians like Friedrich Merz.

Now he is demanding 500 billion euros to save German industry. But from what? From policies that his own party supported. German production is collapsing, energy prices have become unbearable, and bureaucracy is killing off any private initiative. While Merz beats the drum for an endless war in Ukraine, Berlin's former lifeline - the Nord Stream pipeline - has been blown up, sabotaged with a shrug, while Brussels and NATO have looked the other way.

The US may have profited, but the executioner was in Brussels. Ursula von der Leyen and the caste of Eurocrats led the offensive: deindustrializing Germany, sanctioning Moscow, sending tanks to Ukraine, and forcing German workers to foot the bill.

The result? Revolt. German steel production has fallen by 12%, two million fewer cars are being built than in 2017, and "green" taxes and gas rationing are choking the economy. In traditionally conservative states, the AfD party is rising in the polls, a sign that Germans are beginning to understand who has been emptying their economy from within.

Not Russia. But their own leaders in Brussels and Berlin, who danced to the beat of the drums at Davos. Germany is not testing Europe's patience - European elites have tested Germany's limits and violated them.

Romania, an echo of the same tragedy

Exactly the same scenario is being played out in Romania - only here, the play is being played out with cheaper and more obedient extras. What is happening in Germany today is a mirror of the Romanian disaster: a slow economic suicide, under the applause of those who claim to lead us towards "European progress".

Romanian industry has been dismantled piece by piece, under the pretext of modernization. Hunedoara Combine, Arpechim, Azomureș, Oltchim, RAFO, Tractorul Brașov, Roman SA - all were destroyed in the complicit silence of the rulers who posed happily in Brussels. Romania has become an economic colony, where energy is more expensive than in the West, even though we are producers. Our gas is exported, our electricity is overtaxed, and Romanians pay Western bills with Balkan salaries.

As in Germany, here too politicians are asking for money to save an economy that they themselves have destroyed. They boast of "record investments", but the reality is that Romania lives on loans. Ten billion here, fifteen billion there - an infusion meant to keep a bloated and inert administration alive.

At the same time, mines are closing, gas-fired power plants are blocked, and imports are increasing. All this in the name of the "green" transition, a dogma that has become the new political religion of Brussels.

Anyone who dares to criticize this disaster is immediately labeled as "populist" or "anti-European." Citizens who dare to ask questions are stigmatized and silenced - just like in Germany.

Romanians, like Germans, are beginning to see who stole their future. Not Moscow. Not "dark forces." But their own leaders, trained to say "yes" without thinking, to sign without reading, and to execute without understanding.

The result is visible to the naked eye: empty factories, young people who have left, abandoned villages, cities that live only on salaries and loans from the state. The real Romania, the one that works, pays and is silent, is collapsing under the weight of European hypocrisy and domestic cowardice.

Conclusion: same plan, same end

Germany falls. Romania surrenders.

Except that in our case, the collapse happened quietly - covered by applause, slogans about progress and partnerships that transformed us from a productive country into a mere docile consumer.

Germans are starting to revolt. We are just starting to wake up.

But the real question remains: Will we have the courage to look in the mirror and see who pressed the self-destruct button with our hand?
