On 29 June 2005, India and Singapore sign the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) — India’s first comprehensive free-trade deal with an ASEAN country, covering goods, services, investment and professional mobility.

CECA provides tariff cuts, services-market access and a framework for bilateral investment, reinforcing Singapore’s role as a hub for Indian firms in Southeast Asia.

Negotiated after a joint feasibility study, it enters into force in stages by chapter and was later updated through periodic reviews.

For Indian trade policy in the 2000s, CECA was a template for other “comprehensive” partnerships in the region.

For India–Singapore relations, 29 June 2005 marks the signing of India’s first CECA of this kind.
