International Translation Day is observed annually on 30 September, a date associated with the feast of Saint Jerome. The International Federation of Translators (FIT) publishes for 2026 the theme “Linguistic Diversity and Language Rights”, with the subtitle “the power of being understood”.

FIT’s theme links translation, interpreting and terminology to linguistic inclusion. Language rights — access to information, justice and services in a language one understands — are not automatic; they depend on professionals and on institutions that put them into practice.

Written translation, oral interpreting, subtitling and localisation are distinct trades. Automated tools and artificial intelligence can support the workflow but introduce errors, omissions and confidentiality risks, especially where languages are unequally resourced. Human review remains essential for legal, medical and diplomatic texts.

FIT announces an online Zoom webinar on 29 September 2026 — the day before the UN date. Registration, according to FIT’s page, is still to open; this article does not publish an unverified session timetable.

UNESCO and Translation Commons are separately holding an online event on 30 September within the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, on the same linguistic-diversity theme. It is not the European Day of Languages (26 September) and not a commercial freelancer-platform conference.

Institutional programmes should be checked with the organiser. Presenting FIT’s theme does not mean a single worldwide conference calendar.

The 30 September observance recognises professional work; it does not treat machine output as the equivalent of professional review.
