Moldova plans to start importing natural gas from Romania in autumn 2027, with the new gas year, from the Neptun Deep Black Sea field. Prime minister Vasile Tofan made the announcement after talks in Chișinău with his Romanian counterpart Luca Niculescu, according to Radio Moldova and TVR Moldova; deliveries have not begun yet.

Tofan said Neptun Deep gas would be closer to the country, cutting transport costs, in a partnership he described as beneficial for both the Romanian supplier and Moldovan consumers. Project start-up is planned, on the information cited, for summer 2027, with imports to Moldova expected from autumn the same year.

The Moldovan premier recalled that Romania currently produces about 8 billion cubic metres of gas a year and that Neptun Deep would roughly double that volume, positioning Romania as Europe’s largest natural-gas producer. Luca Niculescu stressed the project’s importance for the regional market and said a substantial share of the gas would remain for Romania’s domestic consumption.

Energocom signed a three-year contract with OMV Petrom in May 2025 to buy Neptun Deep gas after the project comes online. Deliveries are set at Romania’s virtual trading point. This article does not treat those deliveries as an active flow in 2026.

The political message of 27 October 2026 confirms the intention and the announced autumn-2027 timetable, not a daily volume already in Moldova’s network. It is not conflated with other topics from the same bilateral visit and invents no earlier start of imports.
