Prime Minister Luca Niculescu said on Tuesday in Chișinău that Romania is close to finalising talks to obtain anti-drone systems quickly. The remarks came at a press conference after his meeting with Moldovan counterpart Vasile Tofan and were reported by Mediafax.

Niculescu said developing Romania’s drone programme is a government priority and that talks on anti-drone systems are “very thorough and very close to conclusion”. He did not announce a signed contract or a delivery date; asked about timing, he said only that the systems should arrive “as soon as possible”.

According to the prime minister, the first equipment to reach Romania would be already known systems, followed later by variants produced at home. He linked the effort to cooperation already under way with Ukraine to develop Romania’s drone industry, noting that drones are being tested “at real scale” in the conflict there.

The government chief said Bucharest is also talking with the Republic of Moldova about working jointly on anti-drone programmes, arguing that citizens must be protected “wherever they are”. The comments followed a question about protecting Romanian citizens in Moldova amid reports of drones over Moldovan airspace.

Moldovan agency Moldpres confirms the same frame: the two governments are examining joint anti-drone programmes and security-technology exchanges. Niculescu also spoke about strengthening defence cooperation, including possible shared benefits linked to the European SAFE programme, without announcing a joint purchase already completed.

For now the announcement remains advanced talks and political intent. The sources consulted do not provide an official installation timetable or confirmation of a signed delivery contract.
