Romania’s Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare said on Sunday evening, 25 October 2026, in a Digi24 interview that he does not want new taxes and levies in 2027, but tied any new budget programme to a clear funding source. “I do not want new taxes and duties. But we need sustainability,” he said, according to Mediafax.
Nazare stressed that when a programme is not yet budgeted, a financing source must also be found. He did not announce a list of taxes already adopted and did not present the remarks as law. He said he did not want to pre-empt the outcome before all ministries enter their projections for the 2027 budget.
On property tax at market value, the minister was explicit: there is no plan to apply it in 2027. He said the related PNRR milestone was removed after talks with the European Commission and that he had stated publicly after parliamentary hearings that the market-value system would not be used next year.
Nazare also warned about interest costs: more than 60 billion lei this year and, likely, more than 70 billion next year, to be paid by future generations. The stated aim is a sustainable budget that is credible for the rating agencies, with Romania due to be assessed early next year by Fitch, Moody’s and S&P.
The message remains one of intention and budget design, not a fiscal package already voted. Political decisions on any tax measures, he added, rest with the Government and Parliament; the Finance Ministry draws the lines to avoid fiscal slippage.
