Trump is trying to mix fire with ice again: Putin and Zelensky at the same table?

Donald Trump seems determined to once again play the role of global negotiator. After his "productive" phone call with Vladimir Putin, the former and current US president believes it is still possible to bring Putin and Zelensky to the same peace table. A risky bet, but not impossible - according to the White House, Trump will soon discuss the details of this possible meeting with the Russian leader.

"I spoke with President Putin about the future of the Russia-Ukraine war and how we can reach a peaceful resolution," Trump said. He confirmed that he would address this topic, along with other sensitive topics, at his meeting with Zelensky, scheduled for tomorrow at the White House.

The scene seems familiar. Not long ago, after another round of talks between Trump and Putin - then in Alaska - the White House was celebrating a "great rapprochement between the great powers". Then, after a meeting with Zelensky, Trump also declared that the US and Ukraine must "defeat Russia together." Recent history shows that the US president is capable of changing course abruptly, depending on the political context and domestic reactions.

This time, Trump's tone is more balanced, and his message seems to resonate with global war fatigue. The idea of a meeting in Budapest between Putin and Trump, followed by a possible round of trilateral talks, has reignited the hopes of those who believe that peace can still be negotiated.

However, skepticism hangs in the air. Zelensky continues to talk about "defeating Russia all the way to the Urals," while Moscow seems willing to talk only on its own terms. Trump, once again caught between two worlds, plays the role of a mediator with a double meaning - sometimes a pacifist, sometimes a strategist.

Will Trump succeed in bringing the two irreconcilable enemies to the same table or will it be just another image episode? We will see tomorrow, after the meeting with Zelensky. Until then, history reminds us: Trump changed his mind again.
